15 The separate packages are indeed unnecessary in many cases because you
16 can tell sys-kernel/linux-firmware to only install desired firmware
17 files via USE=savedconfig. Nonetheless, some users and developers prefer
18 to have the firmware in individual packages.

20 One of the reasons for this is that the linux-firmware upstream is
21 sometimes slow to accept new or updated firmware in their repository
22 (they have gotten better in recent times though). This however does not
23 help products which are EOL (iwl3956/4965 etc.). They will not receive
24 any firmware updates any longer, therefore their individual packages
25 were less useful and have been last-rited.
