This particular bug is fixed in the 3.0 development stream. The |

symptoms would be similar to what you describe, and would be caused by |

the installation directory being read-only. Eclipse previously |
| 18 |
attempted to write a small configuration directory to the installation |
| 19 |
directory on first execution. In the absence of this configuration |
| 20 |
directory, it re-runs the installation at start-up. |

A workaround is to install Eclipse to a directory writable by the user, |

or possibly to run Eclipse once as root when the file system is writable |
