1 Historically those DIRs contained all utils/tools to manage the system
2 and fix problems etc. when you are unable to get /usr up, i.e. when it's
3 remote. The rootfs basically contained all the core system-tools minus
4 all the apps, which usually were managed centrally.

6 With bbox of course one could mimic this to a certain point easily
7 within an initramfs though.
