Last time a flame war broke out over FHS, I did a bit of research on
that very subject. It seems that /usr/libexec is an idiom from our
brothers in the BSD world.

I would have to agree that /usr/lib/misc would be better than
/usr/libexec, but labeling anything "misc" always feels like a cop-out
to me. Then again, /usr/lib/misc would be the logical compliment to
/var/lib/misc and /usr/share/misc.

Looking in my own /usr/libexec, though, it seems like everything there
already has a better place somewhere else. Some could go in /usr/bin or
/usr/sbin (e.g. mozilla-launcher). Some really should be in /usr/lib
(e.g. libattr.a and libattr.la). Some could find a home in a specific
subdirectory of /usr/lib (e.g. gnome-applets).
