Subject: [gentoo-dev] Why not OpenMotif-2.2.x?

I have heard that something with openmotif-2.2.x was fundamentally broken
- but a forum search, bugs.gentoo.org and a google search did not give me
any hints as to what is so wrong with that version of openmotif.

I have found that many other distros seem to be using that version,
without problems AFAIK - so I'm left wondering..

I also know, that I had openmotif-2.2 installed on my systems earlier
(when there was a 2.2 ebuild - and it worked just fine for me).

My reason for wanting openmotif-2.2 is that I would like to make use of
regex-coach program from http://www.weitz.de/regex-coach/

it's a really great program, which is unfortunately only free as in beer -
not as in freedom.

When I try to run it, I get this:
Error: Motif version string ("@(#)Motif Version 2.1.30") indicates invalid
library version. Requires (("Lesstif" "2.1") ("Motif" "2.2")).

etcat -v lesstif says:
* x11-libs/lesstif :
[ ] 0.93.94 (0)

All in all - I would very much like it if you could inform me why Gentoo
is using an (in other distros eyes) old version of opemotif (and
appereantly also old version of lesstif)?
