I think this is where we approach one of the general problems of |
13 |
open source and its usual "target markets" |
14 |
|
15 |
many projects seem to be initially created by someone being in |
16 |
need of some program, not being able to find anything sufficient |
17 |
for their needs, so they just start it, where later other ppl |
18 |
join saying oh thats a cool program / project, i gonna help it - |
19 |
or i have an idea how to improve it, when in search for the same. |
20 |
|
21 |
This approach leads to the usual target audience being the same |
22 |
as the program writers and visa versa. |
23 |
|
24 |
And it works for almost everything, |
25 |
except easy to use graphical configuration tools, |
26 |
because to write them, you need depth knowledge of how systems work |
27 |
- and when you have that depth knowledge, |
28 |
you are not in need of such a program anymore, since you easily configure it |
29 |
by editing the files by hand, and the modifications you want to do |
30 |
are more detailed than a "graphical tool for beginners" |
31 |
would be able to provide anyway. |
32 |
|
33 |
In opposition to companies like SuSE who wanted to sell a product / system |
34 |
and so payed developers for creating a tool they didnt need for themselfs. |
35 |
|
36 |
A possible solution to the problem could be some sort of |
37 |
"easy configuration tool contest" |
38 |
where beginner user could donate via paypal or such for a winners price, |
39 |
given out later for the best configuration tool written. |
40 |
|
41 |
or something like this, -- wadda you think? |
