Subject: [gentoo-dev] slow fixpackages operation bug set to wontfix?

Message-Id: 20030921234929.GA27217@ufies.org
Hey folks. I finally got around to going to report the slow fixpackages
problem I reported to -user a while back and found this bug
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27421) already there, but set to
WONTFIX. I'm not sure if SpanKY understood the problem.

Basically one one of my boxes (k7-900, 512mb) fixpackages runs fast. The
"." phase zips by and then the "*" phase goes at about the same speed.
The other box that I have running gentoo (cel-533, 128mb ram) runs the
"." phase almost as fast, but the "*" phase runs about one "*" a minute
or two. Updates can take literally hours on this system, and seem to be
getting slower all the time.

As I recall, fixpackages is just moving files around or something right?
The files can't be that big. The / is RAID0 on 2x2G scsi drives, older
ones, with only 5mb/s transfer rate, 10mb/s with the RAID, but still,
the time taken seems stupidly slow on this box compared my other one. I
know that if everyone was getting this there'd be uproars (or so I'd
think).

Should I resubmit the bug, or is there anything that anyone can think of
to help fix this. I'll probably try putting another drive in for the /,
to see if it's the hardware somehow, but I have to find one first.
