Hi everyone,

I'm pleased to say that I've just committed an ebuild for webapp-config v1.0
into Portage. It should be showing up on the rsync mirrors in about an hour
or so.

webapp-config is the first tool to be delivered from GLEP 11 - our design for
how Gentoo is going to support virtual hosting for web servers. You can read
more about GLEP 11 at http://glep.gentoo.org/, and from the article published
in the December 2003 edition of php|architect at http://www.phparch.com/.

This version of webapp-config supports installs, cleans, and updates, and is
ready for a wider audience. The ebuild installs an example phpmyadmin ebuild
into /usr/doc/webapp-config to show you how to write your own ebuild. If
you're the maintainer of an ebuild for a web-based app, please have a go at
converting your ebuild, and let me know how you get on.

Please log all bugs to bug id #30607. Don't email me about bugs - our
satelite link from the php|cruise ship makes getting at my email a bit
painful.

Next step for me is going to be putting some developer documentation together
on how to write ebuilds for webapp-config, and a separate user doc explaining
how to use the webapp-config tool to install & maintain your web-based
applications.

This release supports the Apache 1 & Apache 2 web servers. I'm keen for
someone to add support for Cherokee and the other web servers that Gentoo
supports. Hopefully (fingers crossed), it should be easy enough to do. Just
take a look at /usr/lib/webapp-config/servers/ to get started.

Best regards,
Stu
