I'd like to make the list aware that there is a new release of Tin Hat |

out. For those unfamiliar, Tin Hat is a fully featured Linux desktop |
| 9 |
based on Hardened Gentoo which runs purely in RAM. It aims to be very |
| 10 |
secure, stable, and fast. Thanks to the dedicated Gentoo developers, |
| 11 |
our group continues to put together a tightly knit hardened destkop |
| 12 |
environment. |

This release has some major feature enhancements. Primarly, one can |
| 15 |
now "save" a running Tin Hat system to an ISO image or pen drive, thus |
| 16 |
one can implement and retain customizations to the OS. An added |
| 17 |
benefit is that now Tin Hat releases are no longer built from VMware |
| 18 |
templates but from prestine running Tin Hat systems, all purely in |
| 19 |
RAM. Saving a running system and building a new release is in essence |
| 20 |
the same process. The bash scripts are the key, and one can use them |
| 21 |
to "ramify" any Linux system as we have already done to other |
| 22 |
customized Gentoo systems which we use for teaching. |

As a side note to a recent discussion on the list, I hope that Tin Hat |
| 25 |
furthers the cause of hardening on a desktop. The question of whether |
| 26 |
the enormous effort is worth it might be mitigated by the fact that |
| 27 |
much of the work has already been done in a prebuild reference system. |
