14 I can't say much on the reasons for your losing the gcc,
15 but as to saving your system:

17 you made a backup before --depclean, right? use it, or at least
18 the gcc bit. or else take the gcc out of a dated backup and do
19 a bootstrap.

21 without backup, you can get a gcc binary from elsewhere (probably requiring
22 the rest of the toolchain, too) and put it into the old gcc's place.
23 then do a bootstrap, that is, compile gcc, glibc, and probably
24 binutils for good measure for a couple times until the binaries
25 do not change no more. for all practical purposes, three passes
26 should do and you are back in business.

28 or cross-compile a gcc for that machine, take another gentoo-hardened
29 gcc or...
