I'm just giving this a try now.  I've basically reverse-engineered what
it was configuring and put those into my own scripts.  I'll see how this
goes.

Right now I'm going through the process of switching CHOSTs from
i686-gentoo-linux-musl to i586-pc-linux-musl based on
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Changing_the_CHOST_variable substituting
musl for glibc.

That going to plan, I should be able to do the same for i486 too.
