Well, how about I actually give you guys some numbers, then?

I am travelling to Linux World in San Francisco. For air fare and
accommodations, I am spending about $1700 for myself. This is before
food or entertainment. I am also staying in a hotel that I know to be
one of the cheaper ones in the Union Square area of San Francisco, where
the event is held.

When I travelled to FOSDEM from the US, the flight alone was more than
$1200.

That being said, travel within Europe is much cheaper than any travel in
the United States. However, I would have to agree with solar here.
Getting together a bunch of people that will have a hard time
communicating to each other when face to face, due to language barriers,
won't help us do much of anything.

While we definitely need more skills in our developer pool, I'd fear for
my mother if there were 50 more of Mike. ;]

Quite personally, I feel that we could do without many of the more
"argumentative" developers that speak lots and *do* little. I am afraid
that people have forgotten that it is not what you say, but what you do,
as in actually contribute, that gives you merit in a meritocracy. (This
isn't directed at anyone in particular, and definitely not anyone here,
so don't anybody go reading into it or anything.)
