Resending a copy of email to SPI, please do not reply, just for
informational purposes. Awaiting a reply, and will follow up then, and
cc all further communications.

Mr. Garbee(president@×××××××.org),

The following was originally sent to board@×××××××.org which is a
members only list. Which the email below bounced back. Likely not the
proper place/person, but really don't want to ask/discuss the below on a
public list at this time.

Please advise

SPI Board Members,

I am seeking some initial general unofficial information as to Gentoo
Linux becoming an Associated Project managed by the SPI. Gentoo Linux is
a popular meta distribution of Linux, also freeBSD.

To date we have struggle to get a foundation of our own going. We are
working on reinstating our past entity. Beyond that we are looking for
the following

1. Management of assets, trademark (when we have funds to purchase
it from present owner), cash, etc
2. Legal filings, NPO, tax return, etc
3. Legal counsel

We were looking at the SFC and are fulfilling some requirements they
placed on us for joining. I know it's a bit of a long read, but this
post by one of our remaining official Gentoo Foundation trustees,
basically sums up where things are at. It also contains the list of
requirements from the SFC.

The SFC presently lacks funds to take on a project of our size. Not to
mention is some what new, and has never managed a project like ours. Much
less with our existing structure.

I know via the SFC's connection to the SFLC. Provides them more of an
ability to provide legal counsel than the SPI. But from what I have been
told. If Gentoo's Foundation or Project is in proper legal standing,
and/or an entity like the SPI managing 1-2 above. We can apply to the
SFLC independently for counsel.

So likely won't need counsel from SPI, if we can still get 1-2. Which is
basically our main problems. Media has been reporting a bit on it due to
some internal leakage. Although it's not really as bad, just need to
reinstate our existing foundation in New Mexico. Then proceed from
there.

I am just doing some initial research, to see if the SPI would even be
interested. What we need to do before applying, if anything, etc.

I will be reporting my findings back publicly to the gentoo-nfp mailing
list. I did get permission for this email, inquiry, and initial research
from one of our trustees.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from the
SPI.
