Hi! |
2 |
first of all, greetings to everyone on this list, I'm a newcomer. :) |
3 |
|
4 |
I've recently purchased a 12" G4/1Ghz pbook, and of course I |
5 |
immediately [tried to] install Gentoo 1.4. I've used it on a Athlon |
6 |
1600+ for a year now, without flaws. |
7 |
|
8 |
So, I installed a stage 3, made a emerge -u world, waited these |
9 |
24h of compilation, then emerged XFree86 and Xeasyconf. All |
10 |
went well. Now, the troubles. I started Xeasyconf, and tried just |
11 |
about everything. Nothing worked. |
12 |
|
13 |
Basically, if I select the nv driver (on the pb I have a nvidia card) |
14 |
it returned a "cannot read V_BIOS (5)" error, while if I selected the |
15 |
fbdev driver with a color depth > 8, it gave me a |
16 |
"FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid Argument". I understood |
17 |
that this is a normal thing; I tried then to switch to 8 bit, and all right, |
18 |
it was [almost] ok. TWM was blue (???), but it basically worked... |
19 |
at 8 bit. Argh, metacity was really ugly. |
20 |
|
21 |
On www.gentoo.it, I read an advice to emerge the latest |
22 |
development Xfree86. I did it (4.3.99.902) and retried the said |
23 |
procedures. With fbdev it's the same, while nv starts "something", |
24 |
but the screen remains blank. It doesn't go stuck (i.e. fn+ctrl+alt+F1 |
25 |
gives me back the console, F7 goes blank again), it just doesn't |
26 |
show anything. |
27 |
|
28 |
So the question, of course, is: what can I do to have a 16bit X? |
29 |
I can send you the conf files, but I don't know if on this list |
30 |
attachments are accepted/polite. Just in case, let me know. |
31 |
|
32 |
Thanks so much in advance, |
33 |
