Ahh.. when using that you will only be able to use 8 bit fbdev driver 
in X

To get a working screen setup, you will have to pass something like 
this in the bootx kernel args window:

video=atyfb640x480@8-60  (640x480 resoltuion, 8 bit - you want to only 
use 8 bit for console anyway always, and at 60hz) .. sub in your wanted 

My syntax may be a bit off on that example, but if you do some digging 
I'm sure you can find the proper syntax.  That is one of the issues 
that that particular mach64 chipset has, the 'monitor sense' stuff 
doesn't detect the monitor worth may also get  away with 
the oldstyle syntax like: video=atyfb: vmode 8; cmode 8 , but I suggest 
the newer way unless you absolutely have to use the old style... not 
sure if the new mach64 drivers will support the old style properly
