update:
the pb3400 is booting the initrd using eric's arguments, and is loading
all the necessary drivers(loop.ko, cryptoloop.ko, compressloop.ko,
zlib_inflate.ko, sr_mod.ko, scsi_ide-scsi.ko, binfmt_misc.ko, isofs.ko,
nls_iso8859-1.ko, nls-iso8859-15.ko, nls_utf8.ko).

then comes the following lines:
Examining locations for live environments:
device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0
loading complete: total size 336876, 1316 blocks
Usage: init <blah>
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem).
Trying to move old root to /initrd ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 168k init 4k chrp 8k prep
INIT: version 2.04 booting
Welcome to Yellow Dog Linux.

then yellowdog fails to umount initrd, and thus fails to boot.

any idea what's happening here that is causing it to attempt to boot
from /dev/hda8 instead of the cdrom?

thanks,
