I think part of the problem is the title "recruiters." They aren't |
23 |
really recruiters so much as a new developer orientation/processing |
24 |
team. Their job is of course absolutely essential all the same. |
25 |
|
26 |
That said, if there are some in the community who are interested in |
27 |
actually doing this kind of proactive recruitment they should feel |
28 |
free to do so. |

Consider us warned (or certainly me). However, I think the real |
37 |
message needs to go out to those who are counting on Java support in |
38 |
Gentoo. |

Is he interested in contributing to Gentoo? |
44 |
|
45 |
Ultimately the only thing that is going to fix your problem is people |
46 |
interested in Java on Gentoo stepping up to make it happen. |

So, I guess one way of looking at this is, who is our user base? What |
55 |
sort of person would find it useful to run Java on Gentoo? What |
56 |
advantages does somebody obtain by running their Java application on |
57 |
Gentoo, instead of on top of some other distro like Debian or CentOS? |
58 |
How can we leverage these strengths, instead of just trying to be |
59 |
another Debian? |
60 |
|
61 |
I don't think that Java benefits as much from some of the dynamic |
62 |
linking flexibility or build-time configuration flexibility that |
63 |
packages written in other languages like C tend to benefit from. |
64 |
Maybe one of the benefits is from the surrounding environment - |
65 |
running Tomcat on Gentoo on a plane isn't so much about what it does |
66 |
for Java/Tomcat as much as what it does for the rest of the OS, |
67 |
perhaps. |
68 |
|
69 |
And then what can we do to encourage others to contribute? |
70 |
|
71 |
You certainly have my appreciation for what you're doing, and I |
72 |
suspect that the rest of the council would echo that. However, in the |
73 |
end that isn't really going to fix the problem that you're working |
74 |
really hard and you don't have enough help to get things where you |
75 |
want to see them. |
