Hello, |
2 |
I continued working on my issues over the weekend. Finally bit the bullet |
3 |
and removed the ide hd from the external USB case and installed it in the |
4 |
machine. 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 loaded and is running"fine". I also resolved the |
5 |
issue I was having with the SMP kernel that shipped with 2004.2 |
6 |
(2.6.7-gentoo-r11). noapic as a kernel command line option resolved the |
7 |
kernel panic on e1000 initialization (net-setup). Might want to add that as |
8 |
a solution to bug id 42345. BTW, 2.6.8 with apic enabled works fine and the |
9 |
e1000 initializes properly. |

If I can get a little off topic advice, I would appreciate it. During long |
12 |
compiles (xorg-x11, etc) I am getting thermal warnings and the cpu is being |
13 |
cycled back. I've got four case fans (2 back including the power supply |
14 |
fan, one side and one top). It is possible that I disconnected the cpu fan |
15 |
while installing the hd, will have to check that this evening, but all |
16 |
cables appeared to be in place. I'll verify that the cpu fan is spinning |
17 |
when the computer is on, but a power off check appeared that everything was |
18 |
properly connected. Normal operations like surfing, checking email don't |
19 |
raise the temp though, it seems limited to long compiles. Is this normal p4 |
20 |
3.4 (northwood) behavior? These compiles are keeping the processor pegged |
21 |
at or near 100% during the compiles (source pre-fetched). |
22 |
|
23 |
Any comments welcome. |

|
25 |
Thanks, |
