The biggest problem I noticed during two years of x86 service was stabling something like KDE or Gnome. KDE took about five hours (even with optimisations by doing repoman once locally before --force committing it to the tree), where people had broken trees after sync and complained loudly (including insults). We communicated the forthcoming stabilisation one week ahead via GWN, Planet and help. So branching to KDE-3.5.10-stable, keywording all packages, merging back in one commit would really help.
