Well, interestingly enough, the portage system already provides the
mechanism for reminding you that there are such and such configuration
file to be set up or tweaked. That is what these messages that scroll by
too fast say (when a package just finished being emerged). What is
presently missing is a sort of "collector" for these messages so that
you can revise these important notes afterwards.

As for the package selection themselves (because that might be what Nick
is referring to, there might be a way to make base profiles mission
specific servers (ie: a web server profile, an SQL server profile, a
firewall profile, a file server profile, a mail server profile....).
These profiles would include the base apps and configuration support
apps (ie, samba server, include swat to ease the configuration). And, of
course, these profiles could be additive...

The neat thing about these profiles is that it makes it clear that the
system is to be used for such or/and such purpose. It makes it then
possible to make a "little" script that asks general questions
applicable to the entire system. Configuration stuff also present in a
"bazillion" configuration files, such as domain name, which has to be
inserted in the postfix/hostname/apache/ssh/dyndns...etc config files.

I know it sounds like a dream but I want to see Gentoo become the basis
for simple solution servers where, at the installation, you are asked
for the basic configuration information and then it simply installs and
configures itself for such.

PS: I know....I'm a dreamer....but this is the type of dreams Gentoo
makes possible without too much effort.
PSS: and YES this sounds like an install script :P
