The only issue I've had recently involved switching profiles using the latest version of gcc-config <Bug 87839>.  However the devs "covertly" fixed this bug by saying "works for me", but at the same time putting a new version of gcc-config in portage.  So The problem should be resolved in the version your upgrading to.  Check to see how long that version of binutils and gcc have been in portage though, make sure it's had some time to age before putting it on your system.
