|I tend to put heavily used slices toward the center. For db servers, I
|usually do something like.

if you are talking about ide drives, then you should put heavily used
slices at the beginning of the drive

my two cents:

for terminal server, go for 4 harddrives (2 controllers of course), 2
in raid1 for 'static' data like applications, 2 in raid0 for home
directories, workspace, etc ...
on raid1, start with boot, then some swap and make sure you have
enough memory not to use swap most of the time

then put /opt, and tweak your installation so that the most used
applications are installed there;
use /usr, /etc, /bin, /var, /tmp only to hold the basics, put all real
stuff in /opt (or any other separater directory ...) and so that it
uses raid0 for storing app data

if you have enough memory and a proper configuration, access time of
the data stored in /usr, /etc, /bin, /var, /tmp, ... is not really
important

raid0 needs regular backup, so make sure that the frequency
corresponds to the cost of a data loss

well, end don't expect that a good layout gives you much better
performance
it can help you not to loose performance over the time, but there is
no magic involved

regards,
