It is primarily to show that you can (learn to) use the tools. This does |

a couple of things: |

* We don't need to worry about any of the actual summer going to |

learning the basics instead of design/coding. This means your summer |

will be more productive. |

* People who don't care at all about Gentoo won't do the small bit of |

work to apply because they can't just paste a template in from another |

organization or our ideas page. This means we'll get a higher proportion |

of high-quality applicants (but lower count overall), so we can spend |

more time working with each of you to develop your applications. |
