Hello, Gentooers!

*Intro*

Gentoo Anaconda is a fork of Sabayon Anaconda which is a fork of
Fedora/Red Hat Anaconda. Anaconda is an installer for Linux disros,
originally for Fedora/RH but now it's distro-independent and many
other distros use it as their installer. Sabayon is a binary distro
based on Gentoo.

* Progress so far *

The biggest accomplishment this week was the release of a LiveDVD with
Anaconda. I'm having some temporary connectivity issues, the LiveDVD
will be publicly available after these are resolved.

Apart from that, I've fixed the anaconda, grub and open-iscsi ebuilds
in the overlay, re-fitted the screens to accommodate the shiny Gentoo
banner with the current chapter and link to the handbook, made the new
screens validate user input, removed the configuration helpers from
the list of packages installed on the new system (they actually need
to be on the installing system, not the installed system), fixed a
pretty nasty bug regarding the new tree-based mirror selection screen
and started working on the ability to provide a custom kernel
configuration to the installer.

I'm having some connectivity problems for the past few days. I've
decided to switch to a different ISP, in the meantime I'm using my
mobile phone's data connection. Because I've already reached the
transfer limit, I'm only limited to HTTP, so unfortunately I can't
push my commits to overlays.gentoo.org :-(. However, I should receive
my new modem within a few days after the weekend, so I should be back
online soon. In the meantime I'll just work “secretly”. Because of
this, I can't log into my IRC session, so any questions are best
emailed to me.

* Coming up next *
I will continue working on the custom kernel and I'll look into an
automatic kernel configurer. I will also start working on a prototype
of an installer backend that will be independent of the actual
installer. Also, more testing is needed – once my connectivity issues
are solved, I will post the LiveDVD's URL and I'd encourage everyone,
especially those who can set up virtual machines, a spin and report
back any problems.

Have a good weekend,
~ wiktor.
