Seguindo alguns conselhos que encontrei eu peguei o cd de instalação
do amd64 e intalei meu sistema como se fosse amd64. tudo funcionou e
para testar eu fiz um programinha em c, um "hello world" e compilei.
Ao executar o comando file no binário gerado a saida foi que o binário
era ELF 64 bits.

Então troquei o make.profile para
/usr/portage/profile/default-linux/x86/2006.0 (que antes apontava para
amd64).

Como tudo funcionou acho que o procedimento funciona mas este
procedimento para instalação em processadores intel com suporte EM64T
está realmente correto?
