Puede ser que te falte en la configuracion del kernel 'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE'
( no como modulo ).

ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support  --->
	IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices  --->
	[Y]	Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support

Inicia nuevamente con el CD de gentoo, hace el chroot y demas cosas como si
fueras hacer la instalacion y re-compila tu kernel con el soporte, luego
reemplaza la imagen anterior, reinicia y contanos.
