The only way you wil= l make it work, is if you have a minimum one working backup.
You upgrade= a backup first, check if everything is working correctly then you update th= e main system.
Have been doing it for over 20-years.
It is not only the kernel that you have to worry about.

Hi mates,

I would love u= sing Gentoo as Desktop and Server OS. I used sometime ago, but it caused me t= he fact of not being able to upgrade my systems weekly or daily, because som= etimes you needed to upgrade the kernel and I was not really sure that the c= onfig entered for the kernel (loaded through Genkernel but with menuconfig a= nd there load .config file) that was written with previous kernel version bu= ilding was going to not cause something weird or bad functioning of newer bu= ilt kernels with that config.

Does exist a way... w= here you could emerge world, update all the system, finally end up by upgrad= ing the kernel and being sure that the old .config you used through menuconf= ig (or by any other way of importing) would not select erroneous parameters i= n newer kernels?. I though there were some... lint options for the .cofig?. I= think I have used them sometime ago....

So for sum= arizing, how do you manage for keep your systems up-to-date using Gentoo?. H= ow do you manage to keep your kernel upgraded?.

Che= ers,
