Howdy,
I'm not sure if this is due to the switch to new rig, something I missed
or if it is because of a KDE upgrade missing certain features. In
Dolphin, I used to could right click a archive, .tar, .rar, .bzip or
whatever and tell it to extract to a sub directory. I can't find it
anymore. I went into Dolphin settings and found the Context Menu
setting tab. It lists things like Extract 7z, Extract to and Extract
here and they show as enabled but when I right click a .rar file, the
options are not listed. In settings and Context Menu tab, I clicked at
the bottom to download new services. It seems nothing I add is working
either. I used search terms such as 7z, .rar, archive and others but
nothing I add makes the options I need appear when I right click.
I read that some services changed in the way they install and such. I
might add, several of the services I tried to install complained about
something but I can't tell what because the box is to small for the
whole error message and I can't make the box bigger or scroll. I
suspect that on the last update, I switched to something with a new way
of doing things and the old ones broke. Does anyone know what the new
way is and what I need to add to make this work again? Is this
something that is being worked on but doesn't work at the moment? Did I
break something? LOL
By the way, I have several archive type packages installed. This is
what I have installed.

I have app-arch/p7zip installed (without the rar flag) and I do not have
either 7zip or rar/unrar packages installed here:
[I] app-arch/p7zip
Available versions:
16.02-r8 [kde +pch rar static wxwidgets ABI_X86="x32"] ["kde?
( wxwidgets )"]
~ 17.05-r1 [natspec +pch rar static ABI_X86="x32"]
Installed versions: 16.02-r8(02:26:32 24/03/24)(kde wxwidgets -pch -rar
-static ABI_X86="-x32")
Homepage: https://github.com/p7zip-project/p7zip
Description: Port of 7-Zip archiver for Unix
When I right click on a .rar archive I am offered to decompress it either via
the 'Actions' submenu:
Actions > Extract to subdirectory with 7-Zip
Or, via the 7zip submenu:
7-Zip > Extract to subdirectory
I am not offered to decompress it via the Extract submnenu, which is missing
altogether when I right click on .rar archives, but comes up on zip/bzip2,
etc.
Have you enabled what's needed under: Dolphin > Settings > Context Menu >
then type in [Search... ] "sub" and enable:
"Extract to subdirectory with 7-Zip"
I don't know what could/would show up if I had the app-arch/unrar package
installed, but from what you're saying it doesn't seem to be integrated with
the Dolphin/ark menu options.

This is the USE settings for mine here. Looks the same except I enabled
rar which should only help the situation.
root@Gentoo-1 / # equery u app-arch/p7zip
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[ : I - package is installed with flag ]
[ Colors : set, unset ]
* Found these USE flags for app-arch/p7zip-16.02-r8:
U I
+ + kde : Add support for software made by KDE, a free software
community
+ + rar : Enable support for non-free rar decoder
+ + wxwidgets : Add support for wxWidgets/wxGTK GUI toolkit
root@Gentoo-1 / #
In the Context Menu settings, I've enabled everything that even looks
like a extraction tool. It mostly refers to 7z. If I right click on
the rar file, there is no Actions option at all. Just for giggles, I
checked the USE flags for other tools installed, everything need enabled
or they don't have USE flags.
I'm thinking I used this a couple times on the new rig shortly after the
switch. I can't be 100% sure tho. Given the packages I have installed,
I can't see why it shouldn't just work. May boot old rig and see if it
shows up there. Only thing is, while I had it booted several days ago,
I updated it. If a update broke this, it will be will broke there too.
I might add tho, I also can't find those tools in the KDE app menu.
When I search for 7, no results. Same for the litter z except for Zulu
encryption stuff. It's like emerge says they installed but KDE doesn't
see them, or something.
I thought maybe I had a setting wrong or a missing package. Those are
easy enough to fix, if one can find where to fix them. ;-)
I'll try to check old rig later.

P. S. My main monitor has been winking at me. Every once in a while it
would blink off and back on again. It would show up as if the computer
had just powered up. It would show the connection and such for a few
seconds. Sort of like it does if I disconnect it and reconnect it
pretty quick. I got some new cables that go from mini display port to
display port. Each 10' long so I'm not pulling on them when I pull the
rig out to take off the side. A while ago, it cut off, stayed off and
wouldn't come back on. It threw a wrench into my whole display setup
given it was the main monitor that went dead. While it was off anyway,
I switched the cables to the new ones. So far, it hasn't winked at me a
single time. I suspect it is either the cable or the little adapter
that goes from mini display port to HDMI. I swapped the adapter once
and the problem remained. I'm thinking cable. Time will tell tho. Odd
thing is, the cable came with the monitor and is a nice looking cable.
Braided and feels heavy duty. It would be a shame if it had a bad
connection or something internal broken from the factory.

From some quick tests I ran I can see 7-Zip does not need USE="rar" to be able
to decompress RAR archives via 7-Zip.
If you emerge unrar or rar packages, then ark is capable of opening these
archives when you click on them. Otherwise you'll get this error from ark:
"No suitable plugin found. Ark does not seem to support this file type."
> In the Context Menu settings, I've enabled everything that even looks

I don't know why you're not getting an Actions submenu. I have Actions
showing up in Dolphin whenever I right-click on a file, or directory. :-/
However, I've observed the following conditional behaviour which may explain
why your Extract submenu does not show up.
I use the 'Details' view mode in Dolphin, presenting files in a list with
columns showing Name, Size, Modified, Permissions, etc.
When I right-click with the mouse placed carefully on an archive's name not
previously selected (i.e. not highlighted) the Extract submenu shows up, just
as expected.
However, when I do the same with the mouse placed on any other columns or
indeed on anywhere else than the name itself of the archive file, then the
Extract submenu is nowhere to be found.
I suspect with the mouse hovering over the file name, the .rar file extension
is identified by Dolphin and the corresponding file type relevant Extract
submenu is loaded.

I'm not sure what you mean by "KDE app menu". Do you mean the K menu search
field?
When I type "7" in the K menu search field it does no find anything to load,
but if I type "7z" it lists "Run 7z". When I type "zip", it lists "Run zip",
as well as files containing "zip" in the file name or their file extension.

I avoid using intermediate adapters wherever I can. I prefer to buy cables
with the same connector type as the port they are meant to fit in. Additional
electrical contacts between cable and port introduce another interface with
the possibility of wear, tear, oxidisation, electrical resistance and
eventually failure. So, if your hardware has a mini display port and you're
buying a new cable, it makes sense to buy it with a mini display port
connector on one end of it and on the other end to come with a connector to
suit the hardware port you intend to plug it into.

I see no difference here. It doesn't show up either way.

What I'm talking about is the thing in the bottom left, by default, that
you click to open apps, shutdown, reboot, logout and all that stuff.
When I put my mouse on it, it pops up saying Application Menu. Given
that the apps don't show up there, it seems KDE isn't seeing them as
installed for some reason. If it isn't seeing them as installed, well,
it won't associate a file with them. I listed all the installed package
in category app-arch and emerged them again, just in case some change
emerge didn't catch would be corrected by emerging again. Still, not
showing up in App Menu either. I think something is amiss here. May be
a missing .desktop file thing.

Well, I bought my first mini DP video card and had a box full of HDMI
cables. So, I was going from mini DP to HDMI. The new monitors have
the larger DP plug and HDMI. I bought a mini DP to DP cable and used
it. Since me and Ebay has kinda parted ways for most things, I found a
good deal on Amazon for a pack of them. I might add, it is still
working. I haven't seen a single wink yet. Unless it does it when I'm
not around. Usually tho, I see it if I sit here for a little while,
like typing a email or something. ;-) This keyboard is still causing
me grief. I have to proof several times and also get a lot of red
