The Subversion 1.14.3 ebuild was stablized 22 hours ago, but it
doesn't actually seem to be available for download. Any ideas on what
happened?

This mirror is broken so probably you cannot ever download anything
ever. The mirror still works but you have the wrong url for USSG as they
don't use subdomains for this anymore.

The other downloads all fail because 1.14.3 is no longer the latest
point release of subversion and it appears that Apache's mirror system
only makes files available for a short time using our current download
scheme. They have a separate download location for "old releases", which
is charmingly venomous behavior -- and they are not the only ones. ;)

But fix your GENTOO_MIRRORS and things should be fine.

While apache has removed it from their mirrors (they seem to only have
the latest release right now? 1.14.4, not sure if it's typical of what
they usually do), this doesn't matter given Gentoo's mirrors still have
it.

And if it's not fetching it, that implies that your GENTOO_MIRRORS
configuration in /etc/portage/make.conf likely need to be updated
(maybe you only have a old broken mirror in there).

If in doubt, just remove GENTOO_MIRRORS entirely and use the default
rotation.

Yep. My bad. Both of the mirrors I had configured had stopped
working, and I didn't notice that amongst the other 404 errors. It
seems like I regularly have to pick a new mirror on at least one of my
Gentoo installs.

Is there some automated way to deal with that?

I never knew that was an option!

Aside for the default (distfiles.gentoo.org, run by Gentoo, presumed
extremely reliable uptime for that reason)...

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GENTOO_MIRRORS

points to

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Mirrorselect#Select_the_Gentoo_source_mirror.28s.29

Mirrorselect is a tool for selecting a good, up to date mirror and
filtering for geographic closeness and download speed.

Huh. I never knew there was a default (reliable) mirror. The handbook
doesn't mention that. It states

In order to download source code quickly it is recommended to
select a fast, geographically close mirror. Portage will look in
the make.conf file for the GENTOO_MIRRORS variable and use the
    mirrors listed therein.

There's no mention that there's a default, and my reading of that
paragraph is that you are required to have GENTOO_MIRRORS set. [Yes,
the section is labelled "optional", but it doesn't read like it's
optional.]

In the future, I'll leave GENTOO_MIRRORS unset, because it's a PITA to
have to keep fixing it when a mirror stops working or starts
responding so slowly.

I never looked in the Wiki because I thought the Handbook seemed clear
to me.

That is correct -- it is optional because the default isn't really
guaranteed to be fast (especially if *everyone* uses it and no one uses
the other mirrors).

I suppose you could also just have a cron job that runs mirrorselect
once a week. It's unlikely a mirror will die quite that fast -- usually
they will start to become slow and unreliable first -- and regularly
refreshing the urls means that when a mirror doesn't disappear but does
change its directory structure, you end up with the preferred structure.

But of course the default mirror can work fine as well (albeit often a
bit slowly).
