Subject: [gentoo-user] Thinkpad T20: savage graphics, framebuffer (tng) and X.
Date: Sun, 24 Jul 2005 17:33:36
Hi,
Is anyone out there using one of these laptops, or a machine using a
similar S3 Savage graphics card. with framebuffer & a GUI, please? Most
of my experience is with headless servers, and it leaves me a bit
ill-equipped to deal with this, but I'd really like to sort this so I
can access my email when I'm on holiday next month.
I got X & KDE working fine under my original kernel, and then decided
to get the framebuffer up. Because I wanted the fancy splashscreen I
chose frambuffer-TNG and also emerged splashutils. That works fine, but
X no longer starts, `startx` complaining of:
Fatal server error:
no screens found
I'm currently using kernel 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 and xorg-x11 6.8.2-r1, but
I'm assuming that upgrading these won't make any difference - surely my
configuration is out, or this device simply can't run X on the new
framebuffer? I have tried without the savagefb kernel option, with it
selected as a module &c.
My /etc/X11/xorg.conf still refers to the devices that were working
perfectly before I compiled the framebuffer into the kernel, but I have
no idea what to change these to:
Section "Device"
Identifier "S3 Inc. 86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV"
Driver "savage"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
# lspci -v -d 5333:8c12
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86C270-294
Savage/IX-MV (rev 11) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: IBM ThinkPad T20
Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1
Capabilities: [80] AGP version 1.0
If anyone has a similar device I would be extremely grateful for a copy
of their kernel .config & xorg.conf files.
Stroller.
