7 Each distro has their own, although I think they were mostly spawned from
8 mkinitrd from RedHat. I believe genkernel now creates initramfs (as
9 opposed to initrd) files, and may have support for compiling the initramfs
10 into the kernel.

12 grub/lilo/xen loads an initramfs exactly the same as an initrd -- the
13 kernel determines how to use the uncompressed data by looking for a cpio
14 header.
