As one of the major distributions at the moment, Gentoo's organisation |
2 |
can be a fiendishly complicated thing to understand, and it can be |
3 |
difficult to know how you can help out. To this end, we have created |
4 |
the position of 'user representative', and would like to take this |
5 |
opportunity to explain something about the role. |
6 |
|
7 |
"Know your users" is popular advice, and often we attempt to achieve |
8 |
this by consultation with one or more users. People will tend to err |
9 |
towards the idea of the statistical 'average user' -- one speaks for |
10 |
all. Although this approach is a simple and oftentimes effective way to |
11 |
find a representative user, the results are only valuable if the user |
12 |
base, their day-to-day tasks and work settings are homogeneous. If |
13 |
there are significant variations, this approach will fail to support |
14 |
some users, and can result in a product that does not meet their needs. |
15 |
It relies heavily upon having selected the most important user |
16 |
attributes for sampling and consultation, and can easily tempt us to |
17 |
think that knowing the characteristics of the average user, we need not |
18 |
consult with them. In this way it discourages us from challenging our |
19 |
own assumptions, and may deny us a source of valuable information that |
20 |
could prevent mistakes. |
21 |
|
22 |
The User Relations project focuses on bridging the gap between the |
23 |
developer and user communities, actively seeking out ways to improve |
24 |
communications between the two and encourage user involvement. It aims |
25 |
to ensure that high standards are met, and to work closely with other |
26 |
user focused projects to produce the best distribution possible for the |
27 |
user base. To this end, it is looking for user representatives to help |
28 |
in this quest. |
29 |
|
30 |
The project has decided that 5 user representatives should be enough to |
31 |
provide a sufficiently diverse range of opinions and interests while |
32 |
avoiding the issues associated with having too many. Nominations are |
33 |
now open; see the forum thread[1] for more information and to nominate |
34 |
any users you would like to see considered for the position. |

39 |
= What does a User Representative do? = |
40 |
======================================= |
41 |
|
42 |
Becoming a user representative may take some time, energy and |
43 |
commitment, but it can also be very rewarding. The role of user |
44 |
representative involves: |
45 |
|
46 |
* Present the views, and represent the interests, of all elements of |
47 |
our diverse user base. |
48 |
|
49 |
* Be a 'critical friend' to the User Relations project, offering |
50 |
alternative opinions and perspectives, and challenging the assumptions |
51 |
of all involved wherever appropriate. |
52 |
|
53 |
* Engage positively with developers and Gentoo projects |
54 |
|
55 |
* Interact with a wide range of groups and individuals to find out what |
56 |
our users think, and what they would like to see happening. |
57 |
|
58 |
* Suggest ways in which other users could be engaged and involved in |
59 |
the project, in planning and delivering information and elsewhere. |
60 |
|
61 |
* Channel information back to the users regarding proceedings of and |
62 |
decisions made in meetings. |
63 |
|
64 |
If you were thinking of becoming a user representative, you will not be |
65 |
left alone. The user relations project will be there to support you, |
66 |
and you will be assigned a current developer as a point of contact with |
67 |
whom you can discuss any questions or concerns about your role or the |
68 |
group as a whole. |
69 |
|
70 |
===================================== |
71 |
= Why become a user representative? = |
72 |
===================================== |
73 |
|
74 |
* You will have the opportunity to influence how information, news, and |
75 |
support are delivered to users, and to ensure that they are organised |
76 |
in the best way possible for all our users. |
77 |
|
78 |
* You will gain experience as an advocate for the user community, and |
79 |
useful knowledge and skills that can be applied in many areas of life. |
80 |
|
81 |
* It is a great way to give something back to the community, and to get |
82 |
involved as a user. |
83 |
|
84 |
* You will have the chance to meet and get to know other users and |
85 |
developers. |

= What makes a good user representative? = |
89 |
========================================== |
90 |
|
91 |
The ideal user representative would: |
92 |
|
93 |
* Be willing to network with a wide range of other users. |
94 |
|
95 |
* Be seen as approachable by others, so that people will be open about |
96 |
their views. Be non-judgemental and show sensitivity towards what may |
97 |
be difficult issues. |
98 |
|
99 |
* Work constructively with developers and staff. Not be scared or |
100 |
intimidated by developers, but to view them as people doing the best |
101 |
they can within constraints. Should it be necessary to challenge them, |
102 |
do so in a supportive manner wherever possible. |
103 |
|
104 |
* Be able to negotiate, to make the case for a particular course of |
105 |
action, and willing to compromise where appropriate. |
106 |
|
107 |
* Be able to step outside of his/her own experience, and be able to |
108 |
argue a viewpoint with which you may not fully agree. |
109 |
|
110 |
* Present users' views with confidence, and not be afraid to raise |
111 |
issues about the role or the workings of the project. |
112 |
