9 I've never had issues running RAID on consumer drives.

11 Sure, devices certified for RAID might spend less time trying to
12 recover data which is a bit more optimal, but only in the situation
13 where your drive is actually failing. If my RAID blocks on read for
14 30 seconds once a year when a drive is about to die I can live with
15 that, assuming mdadm doesn't figure out it should give up sooner than
16 that.
