After leaving "# emerge -uDv world" to work all day while I was gone,
and running "# revdep-rebuild "

  1. " ifconfig eth0 10.10.10.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" worked ok
  2. " /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start " worked ok.
