Grasping at straws, but I found this:

Try running evolution with the --sm-disable option?  It's not a fix, I
know, but it might help.  An evolution --help might shed some light on
what --sm-disable does, if it works.  (I'd check myself, but I'm not
in front of a linux box right now.)
