Hello, i'm Alex. |
2 |
|
3 |
I decided to take the plunge and install Gentoo PPC on my old G4, |
4 |
replacing a thoroughly bloated ubuntu. |
5 |
I chose a manual install, and kernel build, and everything seemed to |
6 |
go ok, until it came to sound. |
7 |
|
8 |
As those who are much smarter than i am in linux PPC matters will |
9 |
know, the challenge comes when trying to build sound, in this case the |
10 |
powermac driver. As there is no identifiable pci bus, the kernel build |
11 |
seems to ignore any alternative, and just keep looking for pci |
12 |
devices. |
13 |
|
14 |
I've added aliases, tried built in and module, and tweaked until i'm |
15 |
blue in the face, but no luck. |
16 |
|
17 |
I'm open to any help, advice, suggestions, or even a dose of good |
18 |
humour at this point. |
19 |
|
20 |
The intention is to build Gentoo with fluxbox, and use the laptop as |
21 |
an admin computer, so i can keep my AMD64 studio box (I'm a composer) |
22 |
in it's current pristine Gentoo 64bit state. (and no problems with |
23 |
this one. I'm overjoyed with the result. The best computer OS for |
24 |
writing and recording music i've ever owned or used.) |
25 |
|
26 |
Any help would be much appreciated, as i've tasted the Gentoo cognac, |
27 |
and don't really want to devolve into domestic distro land any more. |
28 |
|
29 |
Alex. |
