The problem seems to arise from /usr/kde/3.5/bin/meinproc ,
which is a binary installed by Kdelibs. Using Gvim, I've looked inside it
& there are some lines which may throw light on what is going wrong
(I've collapsed multiple instances of ^@):

The error message from the Kicker ebuild refers to 'meinproc'
& a failure to find an index file, which the above says it can't create.

Does this strike any chords with anyone ?

I'll submit a bug report later today,
but it's much better also to have the solution included as well (smile) !
