23 it seems to be a problem with the driver on the Gentoo LiveCD. I would propose to try an other LiveCD for example Knoppix or if you still have any other Linux distribution (you mentioned OpenSUSE) on this machine, where the network interface works boot it and use it to install Gentoo.

25 And don't forget to file a bug in the Gentoo bugzilla if it points out that it is indeed a problem with the driver on the Gentoo LiveCD. :)
