8 My first guess would be that this is not related to the kernel version, but
9 is more related to the aging of the fan(s) themselves. Fans do wear out
10 over time (just had a switch that had two fans start squealing this week
11 that needed changed).

13 I'd suggest replacing the fans with some newer ones. Go the expensive route
14 and get those quiet fans, especially for the myth box (last thing you want
15 to hear is a fan when watching myth).

17 Of course you can verify all of this by installing an old kernel and
18 determine if the noise level drops, but I'd be very surprised if that is the
19 case.
