Sorry about falling off for a bit... had some other things to take
care of.

To answer: No I don't have media-fonts/unifont installed.

installing media ... unifont now  we'll see if it helps

Your second citation appears to be bit different than problem here.
Or really it appears to me to be a big mess I couldn't make heads or
tails of.

The first is right on the money though.

In Comment 2, MikeG attached a patch that is suppoed to improve the
error message.

It's from 2013... but I'd like to try it.

Probably obvious to everyone, but I don't quite get how to place that
patch

/etc/portage/patches/sys-boot/grub/ <here.  But are you supposed to
name it or what?... any particular naming convention that should be
used?

emerging unifont pulled these in:

  [ebuild  N     ] media-fonts/unifont-7.0.06  USE="X -fontforge -utils" 19,197 kB

Now we'll see how it goes. ... more later...
