Mailservers are generally I/O bound. So getting fast disks will help. |

Spam checking is generally CPU bound. So getting fast CPUs will help. |

You should design your mail server around peak usage rate, say max number of emails per hour, instead of per day. |

That being said, <1000 mails/day is really low volume and any modern and not-so-modern (meaning PIII) server can do the job without breaking a sweat. No need to spend big $$$ for such a volume. |
