How do I know which device to specify?

This is the error message I get on boot:

>> Activating udev
>> Determining root device
!! Block device /dev/hda4 is not a valid root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...

There are two hard drives. The slave has gentoo and win2k. GRUB
seems to work fine, windows boots fine.

The slave was removed from one box and put into another.
