Just tried building the old-style inetd (netkit).  It seems to work 
perfectly well with Amanda.  I guess I'll stick with it for the time 
being.  This at least confirms that amanda itself is working fine on my 
box.  Given that the only service I'm dealing with is amanda and I 
don't really need any of the features xinetd offers I guess it'll just 
have to be good enough!
