Subject: [gentoo-server] LPR printer no response
Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2006 10:41:32
Message-Id: 1150972686.23472.34.camel@joe.realss
Hello. I have got a Laserjet 3015 with LPT port plugged on my UltraSparc
5. I installed cups, the printer doesn't work.

trying to figure out the reason...
1) this command hangs there forever
$ cat test.txt > /dev/lp0
2) installed the printer on CUPs, selected the first parallel port
(parallel:/dev/lp0), send a test page, on the webpage it shows:
Printer State: processing, accepting jobs.
And hang there forever.

I attached the dmesg file. The kernel is compiled with only PC-style
parallel port support enabled, but since /dev/lp0 is successfully
detected, I suppose U5 might be using a PC-style parallel port.

I tried two different cables, both behave exactly the same. The two
cables are from different brands, there are no printed label like
'bi-directional' on the cables, so I got no way to know if the cables is
qualified.

Printer tested working fine using USB port.

P.S. a small question: if I have the option to use Postscript or PCL (as
both are possible for this type of printer and for cups), which one
would result faster print speed? I guess perhaps the tigher format can
result faster print speed because the bottonneck should be LPR port
speed. And how slow do you suppose is LPR compare to USB for this
printer?
