1 There must indeed have been something odd locally poisoning it. I just
2 did rm -rfv /Gentoo/usr/portage/* and... emerge --sync failed
3 horribly :-) so i restored /Gentoo/usr/portage/profiles based on a
4 hunch informed by stuff in the error messages and emerge --sync is now
5 pulling everything down happily, it seems.
