Scratch that. While I can now emerge m4 successfully, it still hasn't solved the original problem with not being able to emerge autconf-2.61-r1. It still fails with this error message:

make: 1254-002 Cannot find a rule to create target ../bin/autom4te from dependencies.
Stop.
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 1.

Where does autom4te come from ? I had thought this was part of m4, but that doesn't look like it's the case. Has anyone seen this problem ?

I disabled both the patches in the m4 ebuild (one was for BSD the other for Darwin) and ... I _WAS_ able to finally emerge m4 !!

Thanks very much to Matt for this suggestion, I very much appreciate it.

AIX does not have any autotools that I know of. I have some older versions installed (compiled by hand) but they didn't seem to be the right versions. In any event, I'm past this problem, so that's good.

Thanks very much!!

Matt's suggestion makes sense. If I look at the solaris bootstrap, m4
is bootstrapped before autoconf and friends. What exact error do you
get? Does AIX come without any autotools at all?
