FWIW, I have a Linux prefix with ~1800 packages, and a Mac OS 10.13 prefix
with ~700 packages. From time to time I do see problems happening when
updates break a package, but most packages should work. I am installing
the two prefixes above on CVMFS (https://cernvm.cern.ch/portal/filesystem)
to promote Gentoo prefix as a way to distribute software for LHC experiments.
I don't boostrap regularly, though, just do emerge -u world on the packages
I have already installed.
