Most likely this is due to those particular fonts not being available
on your system. It is possible to start cooledit while specifying some
other fonts: cooledit -font 8x13bold file &

But when I try to load some other font with "cooledit -font <font-name>"
I get crashes immediately after entering text unless I specify a file on
the command line.

So there are other problems indeed. The cooledit source code has been
stagnant for some time and probably needs a lot of updating.

At least the patch I included in my original post works for me.
