I just did an emerge sync a few minutes ago, and still cannot emerge
alsa-driver-1.0.2c.

It fails in the make process, while looking for the
file /usr/src/linux-2.6.1-gentoo-r1/arch/x86/Makefile and not finding it.
It seems odd to me that it's not there (the only x86 directory I have
under arch is x86_64), so why it's not there is a mystery to me. I'm
using an Athlon XP CPU which I don't think is a 64 bit processor.

Is this a bug? Should I re-emerge and rebuild my kernel? I don't mind
helping to test alsa code that may be buggy, but would prefer using a
kernel where the rest of the code is relatively stable, so I don't think
I want to upgrade the kernel beyond 2.6.1.

Any thoughts on how to get alsa-driver going here?
