I agree with you that the best solution is to show important messages after |

the installation. To answer your question about this specific case; I think |

timing was not very fortunately. Maybe you needed to wait a little bit longer |

between announcement and marking stable of the package. |

But you must realise that there are users out there who know very little about |

Linux in general and Gentoo in specific that will start to flame if something |

goes wrong nomatter how well you prepare and announce changes. Also realise |

that these (sometimes very loud) users only represent a very small fraction |

of the userbase and the most of them really appreciate your work. |
